About this Project

Haunted by Change

"Haunted by Change" is a project that focuses on space and how space can be haunted by its history. Whether or not people are aware of it, the Eastern Washington University campus has pain that resides in some of its buildings. That pain is caused by physical change and cultural appropriation that occurs in and toward these buildings. A trauma is created for Tawanka, Martin, Morrison and Showalter through the pain and it affects EWU culture. Our goal was to personify and give voices to these buildings and discuss the effects of change at Eastern. The audio tracks are framed by stories of the building (its history), a question that the building has produced for us regarding a piece of its history, and a dream we had for how to answer the question. We would like to thank our two classmates that were kind enough to voice the buildings Tawanka and Showalter. The past and present pictures seen in the slider were chosen to visualize the changes that students may not know happened on campus. They also show people things that stayed the same over the years. By looking at the past we can dream of a future for these buildings and spaces on campus.

Eastern Revealed

"Haunted by Change" is part of the Eastern Revealed project at Eastern Washington University. The host site is located here, and you will be able to access all of the other projects affiliated with Eastern Revealed without having to find their QR codes. This project is for a graduate Digital Humanities course at Eastern Washington University. The goal of the Eastern Revealed project was to explore the various ways in which something can haunt something else. That is a vague goal, but once you look at the various projects it becomes clear at the hauntings that exist at EWU.

EWU Archives

All of the before pictures of the EWU Campus buildings, the Easterner articles, and chronological history of EWU came from the EWU Archives. Their Digital Archive has collections about Eastern Washington University's history and regional history, which is where we accessed the chronological history of EWU, Easterner articles and the before picture for the Robert Reid Laboratory School. The Digital Project Archivist, Steven Bingo, was kind enough to assist us in finding the pictures of the Normal School, Morrison and Tawanka from previous years.
